Issued on the 40th anniversary of Gagarin's April 12, 1961 flight aboard Vostok 1, this coin arrived in the same year Russia marked four decades of human spaceflight — a milestone the Soviet state had exploited so aggressively for Cold War propaganda that the anniversary itself carried residual political weight even under the new federation. Gagarin died in a MiG-15 training crash in 1968, never living to see the Moon landings he had been quietly angling to participate in.
