The Vladikavkaz Branch of the State Bank issued local emergency currency during the civil war period when the Caucasus region was in genuine administrative chaos — Bolshevik, White, and short-lived Terek Soviet Republic authorities all competed for control of the same territory within months of each other. Branch-issued notes like this one filled the vacuum left by the collapse of central Petrograd supply lines.
The S600 series exists in multiple variants distinguished by minor typographic and paper differences, which is why Pick catalogs the B subtype separately. Distinguishing them reliably requires close attention to ink color and text alignment rather than any obvious design change.
