The Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus were formally established on 20 March 1992, roughly a year after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, inheriting much of the military infrastructure, personnel, and equipment of the former Byelorussian Military District. The centennial this coin marks counts backward to 1918 — specifically to the short-lived Byelorussian People's Republic and its nascent military formations, a lineage the modern Belarusian state has chosen to claim despite that republic's collapse within months under Soviet and German pressure.
