Part of the Bank of Russia's long-running "Regions of the Russian Federation" bimetallic series, this issue marks Arkhangelsk Oblast — a territory whose economic and strategic importance dates to the 16th century, when the White Sea port of Arkhangelsk was Russia's only outlet for foreign maritime trade before Peter the Great opened the Baltic. The region later served as a critical Allied supply corridor during both World Wars, with Arkhangelsk receiving Lend-Lease shipments through Arctic convoys under constant Kriegsmarine threat.
