Part of the Bank of Russia's ongoing "Cities of Military Glory" series, Bryansk received this designation by presidential decree in 2010 in recognition of its role during the Soviet partisan movement of 1941–43, when the dense forests surrounding the city sheltered one of the largest guerrilla networks on the Eastern Front — at its peak numbering over 60,000 fighters operating behind German lines.
