The "15 Ribbons" designation distinguishes this note from the otherwise near-identical 1947 series — the ribbon count on the Soviet state emblem was updated from 11 to 16 in 1956 to reflect the changed number of union republics, but the 1957 printing landed at 15, a transitional count that was quickly superseded. Collectors use the ribbon tally precisely because the printed year gives no indication of which variant is in hand.
