Qatar hosted the 15th Asian Games in Doha in December 2006 — the first Gulf state to do so — and issued a commemorative series marking individual sports. The football piece is one of several denominations from that program, all struck in fine silver to roughly one troy ounce.
Doha's successful bid had required significant infrastructure investment, including Al-Rayyan Stadium and expanded athlete housing, much of it built under accelerated timelines. The Games drew 45 nations and served as an early proof of Qatar's capacity to host major international events — a dry run, in retrospect, for the 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign that was already quietly underway.
