Issued to mark the 30th anniversary of Malaysian independence, this commemorative falls during the tenure of the eighth Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Mahmood Iskandar of Johor, who had ascended to the paramount rulership only the year prior in 1984. The .500 fineness reflects Bank Negara's cost-conscious approach to silver commemoratives through the 1980s — fine silver was reserved for higher-denomination issues in the same period.
