Wadstena Enskilda Bank was one of dozens of Swedish provincial private banks authorized to issue notes under the 1824 enskilda bank legislation — a deliberately decentralized system that left Sweden with a chaotic plurality of local currencies well into the second half of the nineteenth century. The Riksbank pushed hard for consolidation throughout the 1850s, and many smaller enskilda banks found their note-issuing privileges curtailed or revoked within a decade of this issue.
The denomination in riksdaler riksmynt rather than riksdaler specie reflects the transitional decimal monetary reform of 1855, which redefined the unit of account at a ratio of 100 öre to one riksdaler riksmynt.
