The Banque Nationale du Cambodge was established in 1954 following independence from France, replacing the Institut d'Émission des États du Cambodge, du Laos et du Vietnam. This 10 Riel note spans a decade of issue that covers Sihanouk's overthrow by Lon Nol in March 1970 — the political rupture had no immediate effect on the note series, which continued unchanged, a practical decision that reflects just how quickly the new Khmer Republic needed to assert normalcy.
Thomas De La Rue's involvement with Cambodian currency printing during this period was consistent across multiple denominations of the series, with security limited to a watermark — modest by De La Rue's own production standards of the time.
