World Jerusalem Day — Ruz-e Jahan-e Qods — was proclaimed by Ayatollah Khomeini in August 1979, designating the last Friday of Ramadan as an annual day of solidarity with Palestinians. This coin was issued in 1982, the same year Israel's invasion of Lebanon put the Palestinian question at the center of regional politics and gave the occasion renewed urgency in Tehran.
