João VI issued this copper série from Lisbon while still technically ruling from Rio de Janeiro — he had fled the Napoleonic invasion in 1807 and didn't return to Portugal until 1821, governing the empire from Brazil for over a decade. The coins struck in his name on the Iberian side during this period reflect a metropolitan mint operating under considerable administrative strain, with the king himself an ocean away.
Dies from this run show notable inconsistency across the emission years, a direct consequence of reduced technical oversight during the constitutional upheaval following the Liberal Revolution of 1820.
