| Obverse description | The circular legend JOANNES.D.G.P.ET.BRASILIÆ.P.REGENS runs along the periphery, separated from the central device by a beaded border. At the center, a large Roman numeral X denoting the denomination is flanked on each side by a floral ornament (floret), all enclosed within a ring of small beads. A crown surmounts the X, its height exceeding that of the inner bead circle, symbolizing royal authority. The date appears below the central numeral within the beaded ring. |

| Additional information |
João assumed the role of Prince Regent in 1799 after his mother, Maria I, was declared mentally unfit to govern — a condition almost certainly worsened by the deaths of her husband and eldest son in quick succession. When the French invaded Portugal in 1807, the entire Braganza court relocated to Rio de Janeiro under British naval escort, and coin production for the Portuguese empire split between Lisbon and the newly elevated Brazilian mint. KM#232 pieces from the two facilities are distinguished by mint mark, and examples struck in Rio carry the added historical weight of having been produced in what was, from 1808, the seat of the Portuguese empire itself.
