The OKW issued this Lagergeld series specifically for use by Allied prisoners of war held in German camps, a practice required under Article 12 of the 1929 Geneva Convention, which obligated detaining powers to pay enlisted prisoners for any labor performed. The notes were non-convertible by design — they could only be spent within the camp canteen system, preventing prisoners from accumulating currency useful for escape attempts.
The pink coloration was deliberate, distinguishing this denomination from others in the series at a glance. Camp authorities could invalidate entire print batches by changing the authorized stamp, rendering hoarded notes worthless overnight.
