| Reverse description | Central intaglio vignette of the Session of the National Legislative Assembly of 1872, with delegates gathered around a large table in a formal chamber interior. The inscription SESION DE LA ASAMBLEA NACIONAL appears below the scene, above the denomination legend DIEZ QUETZALES. Maya decorative motifs and a guilloche border frame the composition on both sides. |

The Quetzal series printed by De La Rue for Guatemala in this period was produced under a long-standing contract that had supplied the country's banknotes since the mid-twentieth century. By the late 1980s, Guatemala's economy was crawling out of a decade of severe fiscal strain tied to military governance and civil conflict — the 10 Quetzales denomination was among the most actively circulated, and notes from this run show heavy wear as a result.
The security thread on this series is a simple unwindowed filament, an older specification that De La Rue had already moved beyond for most of its other clients by this point.
