| Obverse description | Central device depicts the Sudanese state emblem: a secretary bird displayed with wings spread, standing upon a ribbon scroll, its breast bearing a shield decorated with a traditional Sudanese dhow. Above the bird, a second ribbon cartouche inscribed in Arabic script. The Hijri year 1403 appears to the right of the eagle and the Gregorian year 1983 to the left, both in Eastern Arabic numerals. The entire design is contained within a finely beaded border. |

Sudan's 1983 coinage sits at a politically volatile moment: this was the year Nimeiry imposed September Laws, instituting sharia across the country and renaming the central bank from Bank of Sudan to Bank of Sudan under an Islamization drive that would reshape the entire currency system within a few years. The reduced-size format for this denomination was itself a cost-cutting measure as Sudan's economy buckled under debt and falling oil revenues.
