| Obverse description | Central field features the Sudanese national emblem: a secretary bird with wings displayed, standing upon a shield, flanked on either side by stalks of wheat forming a wreath. A ribbon or banner appears across the bird's chest. The dual date in both Hijri and Gregorian calendars is inscribed along the lower portion of the field, reading ١٣٩٦ - ١٩٧٦. An Arabic legend arcs across the upper field above the emblem. |

Issued under the FAO coinage program, which the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization sponsored throughout the 1970s to encourage member nations to mint coins promoting food security themes. Sudan participated during a period when the country was attempting to position itself as the breadbasket of the Arab world — a Nimeiry-era ambition backed by Gulf petrodollars that ultimately collapsed under mismanagement and drought before the decade ended.
