A mule — struck from mismatched dies belonging to different coin types — this piece pairs dies that were not intended to be used together, almost certainly the result of an error at the Tehran mint rather than any sanctioned issue. Nāṣer al-Dīn Shāh was assassinated in May 1896 at the shrine of Shah Abdol-Azim, ending a reign of nearly fifty years, and mint operations during the transition to Mozaffar al-Din Shāh were predictably disorganized. That administrative disruption almost certainly contributed to the die mismatch.
KM#920 is among the rarer Qājār entries precisely because mule production was unintentional and short-lived before the error was caught.
