Azerbaijan's gold qəpik series was issued in the years following the country's transition from the Soviet manat, as the Central Bank worked to establish the redenominated azerbaijani manat introduced formally in 2006. These pieces were struck in anticipation of that redenomination — the face values denominated in the new manat's subdivisions before the currency itself was officially in circulation.
