Obverse description The Sudanese national emblem occupies the centre of the obverse, depicting a secretary bird with outstretched wings displayed, standing upon a shield bearing a traditional Sudanese drum, with two scrolls flanking the base. A ribbon scroll above the eagle bears the national motto in Arabic. The denomination appears in both Arabic numerals and Latin script to the left and right of the central device respectively, with the Arabic legend identifying the Democratic Republic of Sudan inscribed along the lower field. Dual dates in both Hijri (١٣٩٨) and Gregorian (١٩٧٨) calendars are shown across the lower exergue.
