Northern Bank Limited was one of four Irish joint-stock banks still issuing notes under the Currency Act (Northern Ireland) 1927, which required private issuers in the six counties to hold equivalent Bank of England notes as backing. That constraint shaped both the conservatism of the series and its relatively low circulation volumes — the 10 Pound denomination moved slowly even by the standards of commercial banking in rural Ulster.
Perkins, Bacon produced the plates using their established intaglio security engraving methods, the same house responsible for numerous colonial and dominion issues of the period. The note predates Northern Bank's absorption into the Midland Bank group's Irish operations by several decades.
