Additional information

Piedforts — coins struck at double the standard planchet thickness — have a documented history at the Royal Mint stretching back to medieval times, when they were produced as presentation pieces and pattern proofs rather than for circulation. The modern commemorative piedfort program was revived in earnest during the 1980s. This example, issued the year Prince Philip died at 99 in April 2021, was among the final commemorative releases tied to his lifetime rather than his memory — the design having been prepared before his death and the issue proceeding as scheduled.
