Additional information

Issued to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, this coin reflects Guernsey's particular relationship with that conflict — the island raised the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry, which suffered catastrophic losses at Cambrai and Passchendaele. Guernsey itself, as a Crown dependency rather than part of the United Kingdom, had no legal obligation to participate, yet voluntary enlistment was substantial relative to the island's population of roughly 40,000.

The Royal Guernsey Light Infantry was not formed until 1916, drawn largely from men who had already served in other British regiments.
