| Additional information |
Alderney has long served as a vehicle for British commemorative gold issues that the Royal Mint declines to produce at this scale, and this piece — among the largest gold coins struck for the engagement announcement — was released months before the April 2011 wedding. The engagement itself was announced on 16 November 2010, and the mint moved quickly to capitalize on what would become an enormous global merchandising moment.
At 154 grams of 22-carat gold, this is a five-ounce piece by another name — a format chosen almost entirely for its bullion appeal rather than any ceremonial function.
