H.C. Coombs signed Australian banknotes in two distinct capacities — first as Governor of the Commonwealth Bank, then, after the Reserve Bank of Australia was established in 1960, as Governor of the new institution. This note straddles that transition, with the 1954 signature pairing predating the split and the 1960 pairing reflecting it, even though the issuing authority printed on the note remained unchanged until new Reserve Bank issues superseded the series.
Roland Wilson's knighthood, conferred in 1955, is the simplest way to distinguish the two signature varieties without consulting catalogue dates.
