The piedfort format — striking a coin on a blank roughly twice the standard thickness — dates to medieval French practice and was revived by the Royal Mint in the 1980s as a collector format. This piece is part of the Music Legends series, which began with a Bowie issue in 2020 and has since covered Queen, Elton John, and the Rolling Stones. McCartney's inclusion is unsurprising; what is notable is that he is still living, and the Royal Mint has grown increasingly comfortable issuing commemoratives for figures who have not yet died — a quiet but deliberate shift from older institutional conservatism on that point.
