Little John is the second release in the Royal Mint's Robin Hood series, which launched in 2023 with Robin Hood himself. The series draws on the Sherwood Forest legends as recorded in the ballad tradition reaching back to the 14th century, though the familiar characterization of Little John as a giant quarterstaff fighter was substantially codified by later Victorian retellings.
