Biafra's secessionist government issued coinage in 1969 while the civil war against Nigeria was already lost in practical terms — the republic would collapse in January 1970. These copper pieces were never meaningfully distributed as currency; the blockade that caused mass starvation also made normal economic activity impossible in the final months. Most examples reached collectors through diaspora networks and relief organizations rather than through any functioning monetary system.
