The National Bank of Egypt was established by a Khedival decree in 1898 — a private institution, majority British-owned, granted the right to issue banknotes despite the nominal continuation of Ottoman suzerainty over Egypt. This 10 Pound note from 1899 was among the earliest issues the bank produced, printed by Bradbury Wilkinson in London before being shipped to Cairo for signature and release.

Notes of this series required manuscript signatures from bank officials at the time of issue. Surviving signed examples are rare; unsigned remainders surface more often, which can mislead collectors about true issued scarcity.
