Obverse description The obverse is engraved in a dark monochrome palette typical of late 19th-century intaglio banknote printing. At left, a detailed vignette of the Maisonneuve Monument in Montreal rises above a lacy guilloche border panel, with the numeral 10 repeated vertically on either side. At centre, an oval portrait of a bearded gentleman is framed within an ornate lathe-work surround, flanked by the large numeral 10 on each side; above, the bank's name arcs across the upper register, while below the portrait a manuscript-style promise-to-pay text reads 'Paiera à Montréal... Dix Piastres... le 2 Mai, 1898', with a facsimile signature of the Gérant Général.

Reverse description The reverse is printed in a single dark ink with an intricate all-over intaglio design centred on a large oval vignette bearing the arms of the Dominion of Canada, surmounted by a crown and encircled by a fine engine-turned guilloche frame. Flanking the central arms are two large counter medallions, each carrying the numeral 10 set within elaborate lathe-work rosettes that fill the full width of the note. The bank name is split across the design, with 'BANQUE' arching above the central oval and 'D'HOCHELAGA' inscribed along the lower border, the whole printed by the American Bank Note Company as noted in the imprint at the base.
