Comments

The Mansfelder Seekreis notgeld series emerged from the acute small-change shortage that gripped Germany's industrial districts after World War One. The Mansfeld region was copper country — one of the oldest continuous mining areas in Germany, producing copper since at least the twelfth century — which gives a certain irony to a paper emergency note issued precisely because metal coinage had disappeared from circulation.

The Sparkasse issues from this district are among the more utilitarian of the 1920 notgeld wave, produced without the elaborate chromolithography that characterized the collector-oriented "Serienscheine" flooding the market by mid-decade.
