Deutsche Wäschereiwerke was one of Germany's larger industrial laundry operations, and like thousands of German firms during the First World War and its aftermath, it issued its own emergency coinage — Kriegsgeld and later Notgeld — to compensate for the chronic shortage of small change as base metals were diverted to the war effort. Zinc became the default substitute once copper and nickel disappeared from civilian minting. This piece circulated exclusively within the company's Dresden facilities, functioning as a scrip redeemable against wages or the company canteen rather than as general currency.
