Traunstein's municipal authority issued notgeld like this during the severe coin shortages that gripped Germany from 1916 onward, when the public hoarded metal and small change essentially vanished from circulation. Stadtmagistrat issues — town magistrate offices rather than commercial or savings banks — tend to be among the more administratively plain of the German notgeld producers, relying on an official stamp as the sole security measure rather than serial numbers or signatures.

The stamp is the authentication. Without it, the note had no standing.
