Weida issued this zinc notgeld piece in 1918 under the acute metal shortages of the final year of the war, when imperial Germany had already stripped copper and nickel from civilian coinage for military use. Municipal authorities across Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach scrambled independently to fill the small-denomination vacuum left by the collapse of centralized coin supply — Weida's issue being one of hundreds of such local stopgaps produced that year.
