Additional information

Wasseralfingen issued this piece in 1917 as the German imperial government's war metals policy stripped municipalities of their copper and nickel coinage — requisitioned for shell casings and industrial war production. Local authorities across Württemberg responded with zinc and iron Notgeld to keep small transactions functioning. Wasseralfingen was a company town built around the königliche Hüttenwerke ironworks, one of Württemberg's oldest state-owned smelting operations, which makes the irony pointed: a community that existed to produce war metals was simultaneously reduced to minting zinc tokens because the war had claimed everything better.
