Wangen im Allgäu issued this zinc notgeld piece in 1918 as wartime metal requisitions had stripped municipal coffers of copper and nickel. By that point Germany's military procurement apparatus had been cannibalizing coinage for nearly four years, and small-denomination circulation in provincial towns had effectively collapsed. Local authorities across Württemberg and Bavaria filled the gap themselves, with whatever base metal remained available.
Zinc was the last resort — prone to corrosion, difficult to strike cleanly, and never intended to last.
