Waldkirchen notgeld from private banking houses proliferated in the acute small-change shortage that followed Germany's defeat in 1918. Franz Danzer's banking operation issued these zinc pieces when the Reichsbank could not supply adequate fractional coinage to keep local commerce moving — a stopgap measure tolerated rather than sanctioned by central authorities. Most private notgeld issues were redeemed and melted within months, which is what makes surviving Danzer pieces worth cataloging at all.
