Ostheim's Vorschuß- und Sparverein — a cooperative savings and loan society — was one of thousands of small German civic institutions that began issuing low-denomination Notgeld in 1917–18 as the wartime coin shortage made fractional metal currency functionally unavailable. Selmar Bayer in Berlin supplied many such societies with simply printed emergency scrip, often on minimal lead times.
These cooperative-issued notes are among the least-documented Notgeld categories. The issuing body was not a municipality, so surviving records are sparse.
