Additional information

Volkach issued this zinc notgeld piece in 1918 as wartime metal requisitioning stripped German municipalities of their copper and nickel supplies. The Imperial government's demand for non-ferrous metals for munitions left small Franconian towns like Volkach with little choice but zinc — a poor substitute that corrodes aggressively in circulation, which explains why presentable survivors are harder to find than the mintage figures might suggest.
