Viechtach is a small market town in the Bavarian Forest, and like hundreds of German municipalities in 1917, it was forced into emergency coinage — Kriegsgeld — when wartime metal requisitions stripped circulation of copper and nickel. Zinc was the last resort. Funck 562.2 distinguishes this from at least one other Viechtach variant, suggesting the town issued multiple types across the war years, unusual for a community of its size.
