Additional information

Vincenz Lenz operated as both an innkeeper (*Gastwirt*) and a general trader (*Handlung*) in Unter-Kreuzberg, a pattern common to rural Bavarian commerce where a single proprietor anchored an entire village's economic activity. This iron token belongs to the Notgeld issues that proliferated across Germany during and after World War I, when acute coin shortages forced local businesses and municipalities to produce their own emergency small change. Iron was the material of necessity — copper and nickel had been requisitioned for the war effort long before most of these pieces were struck.
