Additional information

Unna's 1917 zinc notgeld issue belongs to the first wave of municipal emergency coinage that swept Westphalia after the imperial government's wartime metal requisitions stripped copper and nickel from civilian minting. Zinc was the fallback — cheap, available, and deeply unpopular with the public, who associated it with shoddily made prewar tokens. Most pieces were hoarded rather than spent, which explains the survival rate in uncirculated condition.
