Additional information

Sterkrade issued its own emergency coinage in 1917 as the Imperial German war economy stripped copper and nickel from civilian circulation, redirecting metals to shell casings and military hardware. Municipal and corporate issuers across the Rhineland and Ruhr filled the gap with zinc and iron pieces — Sterkrade, then an independent industrial city in the Ruhr before its absorption into Oberhausen in 1929, was among hundreds of municipalities exercising this stop-gap authority. The .2 variety designation in both Funck and Menzel typically signals a die or edge variation from the primary emission.
