Stadtamhof was an independent Bavarian town directly across the Danube from Regensburg, and it remained so until forcibly incorporated into Regensburg in 1924. This piece is Notgeld, issued in 1917 as the wartime metal shortage stripped conventional coinage from circulation — zinc being one of the few materials not commandeered for shell casings. Anton Knabl was the issuing merchant or municipal authority whose name guaranteed local redemption, a common arrangement that made these small-town emergency issues legally binding within a tight geographic radius.
