Additional information

Bad Schönfliess — now Trzcińsko-Zdrój in northwestern Poland — issued this iron notgeld during the acute coin shortage of World War I, when copper and nickel had been requisitioned for military production and small-denomination coinage had effectively vanished from circulation. Municipal and commercial entities across Germany filled the gap with locally issued substitutes, iron being one of the cheaper and more readily available emergency materials. The town's spa status, reflected in its "Bad" designation, gave it just enough administrative standing to issue independently.
