Additional information

Schmölln's 1918 zinc notgeld issue was a direct consequence of the German imperial government's wartime metal requisitioning, which stripped municipalities of copper and nickel coinage for munitions production. Hundreds of German towns were left with no practical way to make small change, forcing city councils to authorize their own emergency issues. Schmölln, a small Thuringian town built on the button manufacturing industry, was no different.

The Funck 478.2 designation distinguishes this as a specific die variant within the Schmölln municipal series.
