| Obverse description | The central vignette comprises a bound sheaf of twelve wheat ears set against a cross-hatched underprint, enclosed within an ornate letterpress frame with scrollwork corner ornaments. The denomination numeral '10' appears in each of the four corners, with the title 'GELDSCHEIN' and 'ZEHN PFENNIG' printed in bold type across the upper portion. Rhineland-Palatinate was itself a French administrative creation — the state did not exist before 1946, carved out of the former Prussian Rhine Province, the Bavarian Palatinate, and parts of Hesse-Nassau specifically to serve French occupation interests. This note predates the West German currency reform of June 1948, after which all such Länder-issued emergency currency was withdrawn and redeemed at the brutal rate of 10 old Reichsmarks to 1 Deutsche Mark.
At over twelve million printed, this was a high-volume issue for a small denomination — reflecting the acute coin shortage that plagued all four occupation zones in 1947. Metal was simply unavailable for minting in any meaningful quantity.
