Radolfzell's 1918 zinc Notgeld issue belongs to the first major wave of German municipal emergency coinage, triggered when wartime metal requisitions stripped circulation of copper and nickel. Zinc was the compromise — cheap, available, and deeply unpopular with the public, who found it corroded quickly and felt wrong in the hand. Most pieces saw only brief, localized use before being withdrawn once postwar supplies stabilized.
The Funck 436.1A designation places this among catalogued varieties with confirmed die attribution. Survivors in collectible condition are more common than circulation logic would suggest, largely because hoarding began almost immediately.
