Additional information

Notgeld issued by a private construction firm — Baugeschäft translating literally as "building business" — reflects how thoroughly Germany's municipal and commercial infrastructure collapsed after 1918. With the Reichsbank unable to supply sufficient small-denomination coinage, individual employers routinely issued their own scrip to pay workers, redeemable only through the issuing firm. A construction company doing so is unremarkable for the period, but the zinc composition points toward wartime material constraints that persisted well into the early Weimar years.
