Additional information

Gebrüder Meer was a major textile manufacturer in Mönchengladbach, a city whose industrial identity was built almost entirely on cotton spinning and weaving through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Like many large German firms during the First World War, the company issued its own notgeld coinage when small-change shortages became acute — zinc being the material of necessity after copper and nickel were redirected to the war effort.

The reference numbers suggest at least two catalog revisions have distinguished varieties within this type.
